The eight robots that have brought Amazon logistics centres into the future.
Being a giant in the e-commerce sector is closely linked to one essential aspect: you must be a titan in logistics. This is something Amazon knows well and excels at, managing 175 logistics centers globally, covering more than 150 million square meters of space, with the majority located in North America and Europe, including around thirty in Spain.
One of Amazon's secrets to achieving maximum efficiency in its deliveries is the organization of its distribution and logistics centers. Technology and robotics development, an area the company has heavily invested in, play a crucial role in this.
"When Amazon started selling books in 1995, it was from a small garage. Today, our logistics centers around the world are powered by advanced technology and artificial intelligence, which assist our employees in performing their tasks and meeting customer demands. Over the years, we've developed and tested safe and efficient robotic systems in our centers to streamline daily operations," the company states.
According to Amazon, their journey into robotics began over a decade ago, when they acquired Kiva Systems, based in Massachusetts, in 2012. Since then, they’ve developed, produced, and deployed more than 750,000 robots across their logistics network.
The goal behind these robotic technologies is to "enhance workplace safety and enable Amazon to deliver faster to customers," they explain. In fact, they confirm that these innovations have reduced order management times by up to 25%.
Sequoia, Hercules, Titan, Sparrow, Robin, Cardinal, Automated Packaging, and Proteus are the names of the eight robots that tirelessly work on Amazon’s platforms, preparing the hundreds of thousands of packages that are shipped globally each day.
A New State-of-the-Art Facility
During their annual 'Delivering the Future' event in Nashville, which we attended at 20bits, Amazon announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art logistics center in Shreveport, Louisiana. The facility is equipped with the latest robotic innovations to assist employees in storing, packaging, and managing customer orders.
